The start of a new year brings with it enthusiasm for a year that can be better than the last.  And if you’re filled with this hopeful enthusiasm, then you may be one of the people who make their New Year’s resolutions every January.

One survey showed that 38.5% of American adults made New Year’s resolutions in 2023.  They may not be a majority number, but they remain to be a New Year tradition.

If you’ve made resolutions by writing them in a journal or piece of paper, then we’ve got news for you. There are many other ways you can make resolutions aside from writing them down.

In this article, we’ll show you 9 New Year vision board ideas you can do on New Year’s Day to help you kickstart the New Year on a good note.

WHY JANUARY 1 IS A GOOD DAY TO SET GOALS AND MAKE RESOLUTIONS

January 1 is the start of a new year but do you know it wasn’t always the case?  Yes, New Year’s Day falling on January 1 only began in 46 BC, but before that, it was celebrated in March.

ANCIENT BABYLONIAN’S RESOLUTIONS

About 4,000 years ago, the Babylonians were believed to be the very first civilization to celebrate and welcome a new year.  They were also the first to start making New Year’s resolutions.

The Babylonians celebrated the start of a new year every New Moon after the spring Equinox, and that’s in March.  During this time, they celebrated for 12 days, in what they called the Akitu festival.

The festival was done to make the gods happy, so the spring harvest would be blessed with abundance.  One of the activities of their festival was that the Babylonians would make resolutions, such as paying their debts, being good citizens, and other promises.

They believed that if they fulfilled their resolutions, it would make the gods happy.  If they didn’t achieve their promises, they believed it would make the gods angry.

This is believed to be the origin of New Year’s resolutions.

ROMAN AGES AND JANUARY 1

It was during the Roman Ages when Emperor Julius Caesar changed the New Year to January 1, in honor of the Roman god, Janus, who had two faces.  They believed that Janus, having two faces, had the symbolic ability to look at the past year, and the year ahead, both at the same time.

The tradition of making resolutions continued, but instead of March, they started to be made on January 1, and the tradition continued to modern times.

Common beliefs about resolutions state that whatever you’re doing on New Year’s Day will foretell what you’ll be doing for the rest of the year.  And though there is no scientific basis to this belief, it’s a great tradition to do something worthwhile on January 1, to kickstart the new year on a good note.

Because of this tradition and this belief, we suggest 9 amazing New Year board ideas you can do on January 1, hoping to make your year as hopeful and enthusiastic as making vision boards on the very first day of the year.

  1. PLAN A VISION BOARD DATE NIGHT

If your relationship with your spouse or partner is your priority this year, then plan a vision board date night on New Year’s Eve or on the night of January 1.  It’s a great bonding activity for couples and studies show date nights are beneficial to long-term relationships.

Take this opportunity to share values, plans, goals, and hopes you have for the coming year individually, and as a couple.

  1. MAKE A WEDDING MOOD BOARD

If you’re planning to get married, January 1 is also the best time to get started on your wedding mood board. Of course, you won’t be able to complete it in one single day because a wedding mood board takes time to make. It can still be a great day to begin planning your wedding or thinking about the mood, colors, and other details of your wedding day.

  1. CREATE A TRAVEL VISION BOARD

Traveling has a long list of benefits and even if you don’t have the budget yet or your vacation leave hasn’t been approved yet, making a travel dream board at the start of the year can be the motivation you need.

You can get started on making a budget, choosing destinations, creating itineraries, planning your wardrobe, and so much more.

  1. ENGAGE IN A MANIFESTATION RITUAL

It’s also a great time to practice manifestation rituals while you’re making a dream board.  You can do cord-cutting rituals to get rid of toxic relationships and bad habits or do the Bay Leaf Manifestation Method and other rituals that symbolically create the portal of abundance and prosperity in your life.

There is no scientific basis to these rituals but they can serve as symbolic exercises you can do to get rid of the old and welcome the new.

  1. MAKE A FAMILY VISION BOARD

If you have a family with kids, making a family vision board at the start of the year is a fun activity you can do that gets everyone involved.

You can ask your kids to make vision boards of their sports, hobbies, or academic goals, and you can also make your own board for what you want to achieve for your family.  Or, you can also make one big board where everyone can put their goals for the rest of the year.

  1. MAKE A SPECIFIC AMOUNT OF MONEY BOARD

Jack Canfield and Jim Carrey are two Law of Attraction advocates who have successfully manifested specific amounts of money.  Jack Canfield manifested $100,000 while Jim Carrey manifested $10 million dollars from his acting job.

Both men used a fake cheque or piece of paper and wrote specific amounts of money they wanted to receive, and after a few months, both were able to manifest the money they wanted to attract.

Having financial success is one of the most important life goals and if you want to practice manifesting it, you can start by manifesting a specific amount of money.

Try writing on a play cheque and mount it on your wealth or finance vision board at the start of the year.  Visualize receiving this money and how you would feel once you have it in your hands or in your bank account.

  1. START A DREAM BOARD JOURNAL

You can also try starting a dream board journal on January 1st.  Put pictures, quotes, and affirmations, and try manifesting one goal per day for the rest of the year.  It could be as simple as fulfilling 20 minutes of exercise, not being late at work or in school, cooking a home-cooked meal, spending time with your kids, and simple goals per day.

You can also make a gratitude journal where you write 5 things you’re grateful for.  Gratitude is one of the simplest things you can do to transform a negative mindset into a positive one, which will help you start your new year on a great note.

  1. TRY A DIGITAL VISION BOARD

As more and more people are doing things on their electronic devices, why not try making a digital dream board? Use sites like Canva or Pinterest to make your board, and you can access it anytime and anywhere, even when you’re at work or traveling.

Vision boards and manifesting isn’t a one-time thing but it’s a habit and lifestyle you need to practice to help you create the life of your dreams.

Being able to look at your dream board even when you’re commuting or away from home can help you stay focused and motivated to achieve your dreams.

January 1 is a time when you look back and feel grateful for the year that was and hopeful for the year that’s just begun.  Try making a vision board on New Year’s Day and let this be the mood to begin your year.

And if you believe that what you do on January 1 sets the tone for how the rest of your year will be, then isn’t vision board-making a great way to welcome the new year?

We hope these New Year vision board ideas will serve as the catalyst to encourage positive change in your life and inspire you to design the life you’ve always wanted to have.
